Once you make your way to the top of the rocky Mount Benacantil, you'll easily see what made it such a strategic spot for a castle!

The hill, and the Santa Barbara Castle that sprawls across it, jut out into the sea and offer panoramic vistas of seemingly endless miles of the blue Mediterranean Sea. Sure, now it's a great birds-eye view over the city and sailboats out at sea; back in its heyday, however, guardsmen were on the watch for pirate attacks, invading armies and other such threats.
